Abstract

Where there are individuals, communication will inevitably occur. The society in which people are born, grow up and owe their existence cannot exist without communication and interaction, either. There are many ways, methods and tools to maintain communication and interaction which are so important for people and society. Space is just one of them. Shelter has always been a human being's most basic necessity; thus, so man and space have an indisputable mutual influence on each other. This effect, which is not one-sided, enables the production of a reality by transforming both the individual and the space, and the meanings that emerge as a result of the use of space as a tool by human beings enable individuals to form a culture and ultimately a social consciousness.

Within the scope of this study, the individual and the space are considered as two factors that affect each other and the use of space is considered as a communication process. In this article, the Cemevis in Beşiktaş and Ümraniye, two districts of Istanbul, were chosen as the space and examined in terms of communication. For this purpose, a sign system has been created over the meanings created in the examined spaces. These signs have been interpreted in the light of the information obtained from the studies on Alevism in the literature and interviews with the “dede”s in the Cemevis in order to reveal the language of the space studied.
