Abstract

Due to its favorable geographical location and lands suitable for human life, Turkey has been inhabited since the early years of known history of mankind. Because of this settlement, Turkey hosts many tangible and intangible cultural heritages. Thanks to the Project “Convention on Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage” initiated by UNESCO on 16 November 1972; tangible and intangible heritage sites of Turkey was included in the World Cultural Heritage List. The purpose of this research is to reveal the level of knowledge and experience of the students at the Faculty of Tourism of Necmettin Erbakan University on tangible and intangible heritage sites of Turkey in the World Heritage List. To achieve this objective, a questionnaire form consisting of questions on whether they know anything about tangible and intangible cultural heritage sites in Turkey and questions on the number of visits by the students to the sites in the tangible heritage list was used. 314 students participated in the survey. In analyzing the data, chi-square, Kruskal Wallis test and correlation analysis were used. In conclusion, it was found that the level of the knowledge of the participants about intangible cultural heritages in Turkey is relatively higher than their knowledge about tangible cultural heritage sites; and students of the various departments of the tourism faculty have different levels of knowledge about tangible cultural heritage sites and as the number of visitors to the sites in the UNESCO World Heritage List increases, the level of their knowledge increase as well.
